c.1930's PILOT-NAMIKI MAKI-E BALANCE FOUNTAIN PEN Squirrel Oak Leaf Acorn SIGNED

(please see many additional photos below)

Recently discovered at auction is this superb vintage 1930's Pilot-Namiki maki-e balance form lever-filler fountain pen.  It has a squirrel, oak leaf & acorn motif, which we understand is a rather unusual theme for vintage Namikis. The squirrel is a fertility symbol in Japan, while the acorn and oak leaf symbolize prosperity and strength. We are not maki-e pen experts but have learned that this luxurious piece shows remarkable technique, including togidashi and raised takamaki-e, and that it has the characteristics of being a masterful B-grade, with the full six character signature (namiki-kan, mei & kao) and with the gold dust ornamentation extending to the nib section and feed. We also have been advised that the artist may be identified as Choh-setsu, but this is unconfirmed.

Its heart-vent nib is engraved:  "14 KARAT.GOLD - "PILOT" - REGISTERED - PATENT OFFICE - 3 - POINTED - HARDESTIRIDIUM - THE PILOT PEN MFG. CO. LTD." and the underside of the nib is engraved with the numbers "7.32".  The closed length is 5" and the barrel length is 4".

It is in very good as found condition, with surface wear throughout consistent with age and use, but with no cracks, dents or repairs.  It likely will need service for use.  The gold powdering may show some loss and the finish may not be as brilliant as it was when it was new.  It is not our belief that it has been, but if the pen was restored at some time in its history, you are buying it that way.  An exceptionally rare and elegant pen...
